In the UK we have a limited number of groups fighting for Queer (or LGB(T)) rights. Stonewall (who I have publicly distanced myself from) play a very safe and cosy game but attract a lot of criticism from Queer activists. NUS LGBT Campaign and individual Student Union LGBT groups are student specific. Schools Out is teaching specific. Trade Unions are specific to their members. Queer Youth Network is youth orientated. There's something missing. Something for the activist who isn't young, isn't in a trade union or a students' union. Something for the activist who wants principles to be as important as practicalities.
We need something for QYN members who grow up to progress into. I've wanted it for a while. I know other people who are interested. I put forward a proposal at the Pride is a Protest meeting towards the end. I want to create a website (probably blog/article centric) for UK Queer people to be able to gather, to comment on Queer issues and (this is important) collaborate on responding to political consultations from a Queer perspective.
If you'd be interested in getting involved in something like that, email me (queer AT penwing DOT me DOT uk) and we'll try to arrange a meeting (probably online). I envision a drupal setup, with a few of us able to put up content. Before I set it up though I want to see what people think and come up with a name. I'm willing to put in some initial money to get the site hosted and some time to set it up. I'd need others who are willing to contribute articles, get involved, comment, promote it and otherwise turn it into a lively place which can be a place we can be proud of and a group we can feel confident will represent us.
