21st May, lying in bed, listening to the radio. I hear music and think "this sounds like Patrick Wolf, but not something I know", checking the radio display (thank you DAB) I saw it was indeed Patrick Wolf. Then Gideon Coe announced it was off Patrick's new album. "New album? Could there be a new tour? Google, help me!"
Ten minutes later I have a ticket for his gig in Manchester last night. Half an hour later I have found a way to listen to the new album (out today!). Bloody hell it's good. There are a couple of videos on YouTube for The Vulture and Hard Times.
So, the gig last night. Unfortunately it was on a Sunday which isn't really the best gig night so the end time was fairly rigid. The tickets said 19:30 so I got there shortly after to find that doors had opened at 1900 and the first of two support acts were on. We Fell To Earth were enjoyable, Serafina (which Patrick came out to introduce personally) weren't really my type of music (folk, but the slow, energy-less type of folk) and sounded like they really needed more practice. They also came on late, left late and delayed the start of Patrick's set.
By 25 minutes.
But oh god was he good. Slight problems with his mike not always being in the right place, but otherwise brilliant. The soaring vocals. The haunting music. The energy. The sincerity, The makeup. The everything. The new songs. The old songs. The "misinterpretation" of 2 minutes to 2 songs.
Yes, the set had to be cut short so I don't think we got Vulture (although I could be wrong, my memory aint great). But we did get Battle. We did get The Magic Position. We did get Count Your Casulty. We did get Daliash. We did get Tristan - complete with Patrick wandering the crowd in his torn t-shirt, gorgeous body showing. Walking directly past me. With me trying not to freak out and sexually assault him in the crowd.
I really want to see him again (and again and again and again). Unfortunately, he's headed to America next and that's a little too far to go...
